An exciting opportunity has arisen on an 18 acre family estate in Worcestershire, for an experienced gardener within a small team. The role will suit a skilled and practical Deputy Head Gardener with at least 3 years experience and genuine love for their profession.

The gardens comprise of an expansive area of lawn, beds/borders, lakes, soft fruit cages, peach and Apricot house, greenhouse and large vegetable garden.

Reporting to the Owner and Estate manager the successful candidate will be responsible for two gardeners, assist in the maintenance of the gardens and grounds and conduct a range of horticulture and landscape maintenance operations. The position would suit a knowledgeable gardener with private estate gardening experience and a strong knowledge of a range of garden machinery including pedestrian, ride-on and ideally, tractor mounted mowers. The ideal candidate will hold a recognised horticultural qualification and spraying certificate.

Regular duties and those in which applicants must be proficient include the following:

  • Horticultural maintenance of borders and lawns.
  • Seasonal bulb planting.
  • Assistance with greenhouse management and maintenance.
  • Assisting with irrigation systems and maintenance.
  • Being responsible for the safety of themselves and others in the workplace.
  • Applying herbicides and pesticides.
  • Water and weeding.
  • Mowing and lawn care with use of a variety of equipment.
  • Planting trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants with pruning and on going care.
  • Hedge cutting and strimming.

Applications are sought from experienced gardeners with academic qualifications e.g NVQ Level 3 or equivalent, RHS Level 1,2 or 3, HND,OND City & Guilds. A valid driving licence is required.

This is a full time permanent role offering 40 hours per week per year with 20 days holiday per year and an employer pension contribution. Hours of work are 8 am – 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Head Gardener

A rare opportunity has arisen for a talented horticulturist to join one of the country’s most beautiful gardens on a full-time permanent basis.  This position will suit an experienced Senior Gardener looking to take the next step in their career, or an existing Head Gardener with a desire to take on a large and diverse garden in order to utilise their full horticultural skill set.  The successful applicant will work closely with the property owner on all aspects of the garden and its management, including conducting private tours for the public on open days.

Set within 80-acres of meadows and ancient woodland, the all-seasons garden comprise stunning herbaceous borders, a potager, kitchen garden, woodland rockery and a Japanese garden, with a vast array of ornamental species and features, each thoughtfully planted throughout eight acres of formal garden.  The gardens are open to visitors, with numbers constantly growing as a result of excellent management and the resulting exposure in numerous publications, features, and on television.

The gardens are meticulously planned and managed to ensure efficiency and maintenance of the highest standards of horticulture and presentation.  The small team are proud of the garden and work closely together with clearly assigned duties and responsibilities.

This new opportunity will suit an experienced and qualified horticulturist with excellent attention to detail, with garden planning and staff supervision experience.  The successful applicant will work with and report to the owner and co-creator of the gardens and as such, the role will suit a senior level gardener looking for a step up in their career.  Applicants should be equally passionate, energetic and experienced hands-on professionals with an ability to lead a small team of assistants and volunteers in close collaboration with the Grounds Manager and Garden Administrator.

Suitable applicants will possess academic horticultural qualifications and experience in horticulturally diverse gardens, good physical fitness, and excellent plant identification and management skills.  The Head Gardener and owner will share the responsibility for guided tours and visiting groups while ensuring health and safety standards are met.  Practical experience with a full range of garden machinery is desired, including tractors and attachments, chemical spray certificates, chainsaw operation, garden budget management experience and confidence/interest in public speaking.

Working hours typically range between 08:00 – 15:00/16:30 depending on the season and planned events.


SALARY:£30,000 – £35,000 DOE
