An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and knowledgeable Sole Gardener to take responsibility for a pair of gardens within a wider farm estate in Hertfordshire. This is a single-handed role for a hands-on individual with strong horticultural skills and a passion for developing and enhancing beautiful spaces. The position has become available due to the retirement of the previous gardener, leaving a well-maintained garden ready for the next stage of its development.

The role offers a truly unique opportunity to be part of the care and development of two exceptional gardens within a beautiful private estate. The first is a charming 3-acre garden, home to mature trees and hedges, an orchard, ornamental shrubs, and a tranquil riverside setting. A newly planted woodland offers the chance for an experienced gardener to shape its future and guide it into maturity over the coming years.

Just 200 yards away lies the second garden, an enchanting 6-acre space of great character and history. Designed by the renowned Gertrude Jekyll, it combines sweeping mature lawns, vibrant flower beds, yew hedging, and a river that weaves through the landscape. This historic garden offers variety, inspiration, and the opportunity to work with established planting schemes that have been admired for generations.

The working week will be shared between both gardens, providing the chance to enjoy two very different but complementary settings. Together, they form part of the same estate and are managed in close partnership, offering not only variety but also a sense of continuity and shared purpose. This is an ideal role for a gardener who thrives on working across multiple spaces, bringing their skill and passion to help shape the future of two truly special landscapes.

The successful candidate will be responsible for caring for and developing both gardens to a high standard, including flower beds, lawns, trees, hedges, and woodland areas. The role includes establishing and maintaining newly planted woodland, managing young saplings and weeds, as well as wider estate duties such as river care, jet washing, sanding garden furniture, and general upkeep around the grounds.

The gardener will work autonomously, manage their time effectively across the two sites, and contribute ideas to the ongoing development and restoration of the gardens while maintaining high standards of horticultural practice and safety.

Candidates should have proven experience maintaining large gardens, estates, or woodlands, along with strong horticultural knowledge and practical skills. Relevant spraying certificates (PA1 & PA6) and a full driving licence are required.

The role is physically demanding, and the ideal candidate will be self-motivated, and autonomous, taking pride in variety and the opportunity to work across two very different but equally special gardens.

This is a 4 days per week permanent role with flexibility on days and on start and finish times. The owners are seeking a long-term gardener who can take real pride in their work and play a central role in caring for and shaping the gardens for years to come.

SALARY:        £35,000 pro rata – 4 days per week £28,000
