An experienced and multi-skilled Sole Gardener is desired to develop and maintain a beautiful private 24 acre estate based in the AONB of the East Sussex Weald just east of Burwash. The setting and views are stunning. Applications are invited from qualified professionals with experience of managing private gardens / grounds autonomously, with the willingness and ability to undertake general estate maintenance duties as required.
Responsibilities are to improve, develop, and maintain the garden and grounds, which include a walled garden (partially developed), fields, trees, hedges, ponds, drives, paths, and lawns in accordance with a seasonal plan to be created and agreed with the owner. Specialist contractors, such as tree surgeons, re-wilding consultants, etc. can be arranged as and when necessary to assist with relevant development and maintenance activities.
The ideal candidate for this role will have experience of managing private estate grounds as a Sole or Skilled Gardener. Applicants with extensive hands-on garden / grounds management experience but no academic qualifications are welcome to apply.
Competence in the operation and basic maintenance of a range of garden machinery is essential, as is good plant knowledge and that of seasonal garden and grounds management. Applicants should have experience with kitchen gardening, correct pruning techniques, basic identification and treatment of plant pests / diseases, lawn care, hedge care, and pond care, as well as the ability to carry out additional estate maintenance duties. Spray certificates (PA1/6) are desirable and a chainsaw license (CS30-31) is required.
Applicants with relevant experience and a positive, “can-do” attitude are encouraged to apply. The role can be somewhat flexible to accommodate the right person! Working hours will comprise 45-hours per week; Monday – Friday (07:30 – 17:00) with half an hour for lunch. No scheduled weekend working is required. Holiday entitlement includes 20-days per annum plus 8-days Bank Holidays.
