Skilled Gardener – Vacancy

We are looking for a skilled estate gardener to join a small team working on a beautiful, historic estate between York and Harrogate.

The estate includes a country home and garden, estate cottages, fields and parkland.

The garden features species trees, calm swathes of lawn, clipped yew beech and box, a formal rose garden, mixed borders, soft perennial planting and informal parkland.

The owners are proud to maintain a garden team with a long length of service.

The Role

• Directly responsible to the Head Gardener, the role is varied, covering all aspects relating to the garden and grounds.
• Working 8 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday.
• Minimal out-of-hours caretaking duties are shared across the team.

Your Skills and Experience

• Experience and good knowledge of horicultural practices including maintaining herbaceous borders, roses, hedges, pruning techniques, pest and disease control, plant propagation,mulching and weed control, compost management, lawn care, hedge/topiary, strimming, leaf blowing, some vegetable and nursery growing, bedding planting and soil management.
• Competence in the safe opertions and maintenance of garden machinery including strimmer’s, sprayers, hedge cutters, mowers, garden/compact tractors and trailers, leaf blowers.
• Chainsaw and spraying certificates (PA1/PA6) are a bonus but not essential.
• A proactive, hands-on hardworking approach with good attention to details and pride in delivering high standards.
• Full driving license.
• Must have excellent references.

The package

• Salary Circa £35,000, depending on experience.
• Annual holidays are 28 days including bank holidays. There is a pension scheme.
• The start date is flexible for the right candidate.
