Skilled Gardener – Family-run estate, Scotland
An experienced Skilled Gardener is sought at a stunning family-run estate in Banffshire, Scotland on a full time and permanent basis. (Skilled Gardener – Family-run estate, Scotland.)
Set within the picturesque Deveron Valley, this impressive 700-acre private estate features extensive formal gardens, manicured lawns, wildflower meadows, and established woodland, alongside a private residence and holiday cottages. The estate also offers fishing on the River Deveron and clay pigeon shooting, creating a unique and diverse rural environment. While the beautifully maintained grounds and walled garden are not open to the public, they are enjoyed by holiday guests staying on the estate.
This role presents an exciting opportunity to join a small, dedicated, and enthusiastic team, working collaboratively to support the ongoing development, enhancement, and meticulous maintenance of the estate’s exceptional grounds and gardens. The walled garden itself is a diverse and beautifully established space, featuring a glasshouse used for propagation and growing from seed, alongside an elegant orangery glasshouse. The garden also includes a productive fruit cage, extensive vegetable and cut flower beds, and a variety of mature fruit trees. Ornamental planting is equally prominent, with luscious herbaceous borders, a rose garden and walkway, established yew and box hedging, and an array of ornamental trees, shrubs, and perennial planting providing year-round structure and interest. Water features and garden ornaments further enhance the setting.
The successful candidate will take a hands-on role in the day-to-day upkeep and seasonal development of the walled garden and glasshouses, including growing organic vegetables, fruit, and cut flowers from seed to supply the main house and holiday cottages. Responsibilities also include plant propagation, the cultivation of perennial plants and shrubs, and supporting the ongoing development of the gardens. Additional duties extend to the maintenance and enhancement of historic rock gardens, meadows, and ponds, as well as assisting with the care and improvement of the holiday cottage gardens across the estate.
Applicants should possess strong horticultural knowledge and practical gardening experience, with a passion for plant care, garden maintenance, and sustainable growing practices. Experience or qualifications in garden design, organic gardening, or permaculture would be advantageous. The role requires a proactive team player with the ability and willingness to support and mentor student gardeners and junior grounds staff during seasonal placements. High standards of attention to detail, good timekeeping, and a commitment to maintaining plants, tools, and equipment are essential.
This position is ideally suited to a passionate and experienced Gardener seeking a long-term role within a unique private estate setting, with a strong interest in biodiversity, productive gardening, and collaborative teamwork. A competitive salary is offered, and temporary accommodation can be arranged if required.
