An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to join a small team on a private estate near Winchester on a full time and permanent basis. The beautiful, grade-II listed home and gardens were designed in the early 1900’s, sitting on a varied 13-acre site.

With rolling views of the surrounding countryside, the diverse estate consists of both formal and informal gardens, attractive outbuildings draped with wisteria, and a developing vineyard. The main arts and crafts garden has domestic revival influences, with a tennis court and swimming pool on site. The stunning gardens are divided into a series of carefully manicured garden rooms, which consist of mixed hedging, copper beeches, multi-level lawns, a terraced area, mixed beds and borders, as well a variety of unique water features. Also, on site, is a small vegetable garden and espalier apple trees. The owners show a genuine interest and enthusiasm for the continued maintenance and development of their gardens.

The owners are seeking a knowledgeable and passionate Head Gardener, to oversee a small team of two part-time trainee gardeners. Applicants should have a proven history of working on a similar estate, with good plant knowledge and maintenance experience, inclusive of hedge cutting, specialist pruning, lawn care and tending to beds and borders. Additional duties may be required seasonally such as blowing leaves from tennis courts and clearing pathways.

This is an incredible opportunity for a gardener working on a private estate who takes pride in their work, with a real passion for horticulture, to work on a striking and diverse estate. The vacancy would suit a Senior Gardener or an Assistant Head looking to move up into a Head Gardener vacancy.

The candidate must hold a full driving license and will be required to drive a small tractor for the role. PA1/PA6 spraying and chainsaw certifications are advantageous, but not essential, however training can be provided, if required. References will be requested at offer stage and a DBS check.
