Rodmarton Manor

Have you ever wanted the opportunity to take forward a significant historic garden?

Our clients are looking for an experienced and passionate Head Gardener to take responsibility for an 8-acre Arts and Crafts Garden near Cirencester, Gloucestershire. This is a tremendous opportunity for a passionate gardener to lead a small team within a positive and friendly environment. The garden is open to the public on a regular basis, giving the successful candidate the opportunity to share their horticultural knowledge, engage with visitors and raise their own horticultural profile as well as that of the garden.

The garden follows the traditional Arts and Crafts style, with a series of distinct garden rooms featuring topiary, mixed herbaceous borders, a kitchen garden, wild garden, wildflower meadow, shrub borders, cherry orchard, ornamental tree arboretum and lawns. The planting is ever evolving, with several exciting horticultural projects on the horizon, providing the Head Gardener with the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of this important historic garden.

The owners hold several Garden Lecture Days each year, inviting prominent figures from the gardening world such as Andy Sturgeon, Jinny Bloom and Tom Stuart-Smith. This is a unique opportunity for the Head Gardener to be involved with these events, meet leading horticultural professionals and further develop their own knowledge and connections within the gardening industry.

The owners also organise outings to visit other gardens for inspiration and support relevant horticultural training courses to further enhance the successful candidate’s knowledge and professional development in line with the position.

The Head Gardener will work closely with the owners and a full-time skilled gardener, taking the lead on the day-to-day management and development of the garden. There are also several volunteers and a part-time groundsperson who form part of the wider gardening team, creating a collaborative and supportive working environment.

The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on garden management and horticultural experience, together with good knowledge of seasonal horticultural practices and a genuine passion for plants and gardening. They must be able to work harmoniously as part of a small team, helping to promote a positive, effective and happy working environment. The candidate will ideally hold an RHS Level 3 qualification in horticulture or the working equivalent.

Above all, our clients are looking for someone with a serious love of gardening who wants to achieve the very best from all aspects of the garden. This is a highly rewarding, hands-on Head Gardener role offering the opportunity to manage and develop a significant Arts and Crafts garden while working closely with passionate owners and a friendly horticultural team.
