Sole Gardener
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and dedicated Sole Gardener to join a beautiful 3-acre estate situated on the edge of a village in West Sussex. This position would be ideal for a self-motivated and passionate horticulturist who thrives in a hands-on role and is looking for a fulfilling, long-term career. The role offers the chance to work within a longstanding, close-knit, and highly professional team including a housekeeper maintaining the estate’s high standards and contributing to its ongoing beauty and development.
The gardens are perfectly set in the picturesque countryside, offering stunning scenic views. They feature formal lawns bordered by topiary bushes and herbaceous plants, creating a classic and elegant landscape. The property includes a kitchen garden with a glasshouse that is ready for development, providing an excellent opportunity for a gardener to revitalise and bring this area to life. The gardens also feature a swimming pool area and a pond, home to wild ducks and encircled by beautiful trees, adds to the natural beauty of the estate.
The Sole Gardener will be responsible for a range of routine tasks including mowing, hedge trimming, pruning shrubs, managing trees (where appropriate), and maintaining flower beds. They will also oversee propagating and caring for the kitchen garden and herb beds, ensuring that replanting is carried out as needed to maintain the garden’s appearance and health. Maintenance of garden machinery and equipment will be required, as well as ensuring that soil quality is maintained and enhanced through environmental best practices.
In addition to garden care, the role includes maintaining the driveway, gates, and other property areas. Non-standard gardening duties such as laying fires within the house, putting out bins, swimming pool maintenance, and other light tasks around the property will also be expected. The candidate will act as the key holder for the house, ensuring that all aspects of the property are well-maintained.
The ideal candidate will possess extensive horticultural knowledge and demonstrate a commitment to maintaining exceptional standards across all tasks. The estate is proud of its excellent staff retention record, valuing and rewarding dedicated and hardworking individuals who contribute to its enduring quality and charm.
This position includes a two-bedroom property located about a mile from the estate, complete with front and back gardens and scenic views. The employer covers council tax, while the candidate will be responsible for all other utility bills. Pets and children (suitable for one child) are welcome, though pets should not be brought to work.
