Website ecgrecruitment English Country Gardeners

A very rare opportunity has arisen for an excellent plantsperson / Sole Gardener with a passion for naturalistic style gardens to take ownership of a stunning private garden surrounding an incredible and unique property in Connecticut, USA.  This exciting position will deliver substantial reward and ensure pride of place for the successful candidate.

In 2014, a renowned landscape architect and educator whose ecology-based approach to design has influenced generations, was commissioned to redevelop the garden. The primary goal for the landscape was to restore a balanced and complimentary combination of vegetation native to the Connecticut area. This includes reintroducing combinations of wildflowers, tall grasses, trees, stones and even native cactus.

The property is set on a hill with beautiful expansive views and the surrounding garden consist of 3 areas which are all designed wild and naturalistic and create a natural pattern or flow through the larger area by filling in large blocks of vegetation. These include clusters of tall grass and prairie-like sweeps across the grounds. The gardens are maintained organically and evolve over the seasons and even years so that by nature the life cycle changes the total appearance of the landscape. There is room for development and enrichment in the garden, so the successful applicant will have a chance to demonstrate their talent. There is the ability to start a small greenhouse for propagation and growing from seed and cuttings.

As a Sole Gardener, additional duties are required alongside the garden management. The successful candidate will be a key holder and responsible for the security of the property whilst the owners are away, managing contractors when required for the house, preparing logs for the winter etc.

Applicants will have demonstrable gardening experience, excellent time management skills as well as a genuine enthusiasm and excitement for the possibilities associated with working on a unique garden.  Excellent plant knowledge is essential, as well as a good understanding of organic methods. The successful applicant will be trustworthy, have a proactive and ‘can do’ attitude. Physical fitness, energy and the ability to work in all weathers are essential as this is a hands-on role.

The ideal candidate will have dedication, vision, with the right mindset and philosophy to work towards a common goal with the owners of the property. It is an incredible opportunity with huge potential to be part of an evolving ecological landscape working with owners who are genuinely passionate about their garden.

Accommodation is provided as a separate area in the main house rent free including utility bills. It is well maintained, suitable for a single person and contains a bedroom, bathroom, living space and kitchenette. Unfortunately, no pets as the owners have dogs.

SALARY:  Up to £60,000 DOE

LOCATION:  Connecticut, USA
