Sole Gardener
A fantastic and rare opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener to play a leading role in the ongoing development of the gardens belonging to a beautiful farmhouse on a private estate in Surrey. The estate extends to a total of 129 acres which feature formal gardens of 5 acres and require an experienced and diverse gardener in a sole position to work in conjunction with the owners and bring their own initiative to engage in exciting projects which will enhance the existing landscape.
The garden contains two large ponds, a variation of pathways, tennis courts, a swimming pool as well as unique and interesting ornamental decorations. Placed amongst these features are both mature and young trees, striped lawns, wisteria, topiary and a woodland area. Currently, the implementation of a large vegetable/kitchen garden is underway and the new gardener would be instrumental in their appointment of the ongoing success of the project. The owners are keen to continue to develop the gardens and welcome a passionate and design orientated candidate who share in their enthusiasm to bring new ideas to the stunning gardens.
Successful applicants will have an excellent level of horticultural knowledge, backed up by extensive experience in a head/sole gardening position on a private estate. Additional tickets such as PA1/PA6 spraying certifications and CS30/1 chainsaw certifications would be an advantage but are not essential for this role. Applicants must be physically fit with the ability to carry out all aspects of private estate gardening such as pruning, plant propagation, planting and are competent in the use and maintenance of the full spectrum of gardening machinery. Previous design experience accompanied by an academic horticultural qualification and the ability to maintain budgetary control will ideally complement the candidates experience to successfully fulfil the requirements of this position.
The estate currently employs its own tree surgeon amongst an array of other staff and external contractors to successfully maintain its functioning year-round. The successful candidate will join the existing team to become part of the wider estate and as such, everyone on the estate plays their part and is expected to assist with additional responsibilities, such as driving tasks, when required. Subsequently, a full UK driving license is essential for this position. The role comes with the added benefit of a 1-bedroom flat, located onsite and of which the rent and rates are part of the package that are paid for by the client.
SALARY: Circa £36,000 + Accommodation
