Sole Gardener required
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced, creative and committed gardener to maintain and further enhance a woodland garden situated in a rural hillside location in Glen Glass, near Evanton in the Highlands of Scotland. The property enjoys far reaching views towards Ben Wyvis from several vantage points in the garden.
The 6-acre garden comprises mixed native woodland, mainly birch, oak, rowan and cherry with some new native tree planting. There are grassy paths throughout and a small burn flows through the space, a feature which, along with the woodland, has great scope for enhancement with continuing naturalistic planting.
The property is surrounded by lawns and mixed shrub and herbaceous borders and circulatory paths lead into the wider garden where it is planned to continue enriching the prospect with rhododendrons and more ornamental trees and shrubs.
A recently restored stone steading sits in an elevated position away from the house. The steading is available for holiday lets throughout the year. Consideration will need to be shown when guests are staying. The area around the steading is in the process of development and offers a wonderful opportunity for the Sole Gardener to be part of the creative endeavour to bring out the ‘genius of the place’. Views are far reaching towards the Cromarty Firth and the Black Isle. Two dry stone walls enclose a long-mixed border which has recently been planted at the rear of the property. Meadow and lawn wrap around the front and side.
The Sole Gardener will have a hands-on role in the daily care and continuous development of the garden. He / She will be someone who takes pride in their work and will maintain the garden to a high horticultural standard. The owners are garden enthusiasts, and the successful candidate will work closely with them on exciting redevelopment projects. There is ample scope for the sole gardener to be part of a creative endeavour to enhance a special garden. The owners are based between their home in Scotland and in England therefore the Sole Gardener will need to be self-motivated, organised, able to plan and prioritise workload and work to a high standard. He / She will be key in the implementation of these projects as well as maintaining the garden.
Applicants will have the enthusiasm and knowledge of how to progress with the land and the environmental aspects. A minimum level 2 horticultural qualification is required for the role and PA1/PA6 spray certificates and chainsaw certificate would be an advantage. Good plant knowledge coupled with tree knowledge and excellent technical skills would be ideal. Basic maintenance of garden machinery is required, maintaining log supplies, occasional DIY/maintenance skills.
Temporary offsite accommodation could be provided for 6 months for candidates relocating.
