Sole Gardener

Seeking a passionate, hardworking and reliable Sole Gardener to maintain and develop a 5 acre private garden in Cheshire, roughly 6 miles east of Chester.

About the garden

An informally set garden which includes numerous shrub and herbaceous borders, 3 wooded areas, a collection of specimen trees and trained climbing shrubs, extensive serpentine lawns, an orchard, small kitchen garden and a greenhouse.

Job responsibilities

  • All aspects of maintenance and development of hard and soft landscaping features such as lawn care, weeding, irrigating, pruning, propagating, training/supporting and pest/disease control.
  • Developing current borders along with designing and planting further areas within the garden on the owners request.
  • Providing the house with a wide range of organic fruit, vegetables and cut flowers for floral arrangements.
  • Maintaining all machinery and tools on site such as pedestrian and ride on mowers, chainsaws, strimmers, chippers, hedge cutters and leaf blowers.
  • Composting and managing all on site waste.
  • Ensuring all aspects of the workplace meet the legal requirements for a safe workplace.
  • Occasional other jobs not associated with horticulture such as preparing firewood and general repairs.

Ideal candidate (desirable but not essential)

  • Experience working in large private or public gardens.
  • Confident operator of a wide range of garden machinery.
  • Excellent plant knowledge and skilled in growing a wide range of ornamental and edible plants.
  • Hold industry recognised horticultural qualifications (minimum RHS Level 2 or equivalent).
  • Hold chemical spraying certificates (PA1 and PA6).
  • Hold a chainsaw license (CS30/31).

Other job information

  • Full time working hours of 8.00am – 5.30pm Monday to Friday.
  • Daylight hours between end of October to mid February (roughly 8.00am – 4.30pm).
  • 20 days paid holiday excluding bank holidays.
  • Entered into a pension scheme.
