Sole Gardener
This role is perfect for a self-motivated and passionate horticulturist seeking a long-term career as a sole gardener with the opportunity to make a significant impact on the grounds of a beautiful estate. The 150-acre estate is based in the charming town of Andover.
This incredible opportunity offers a blank canvas to leave their mark. The Sole Gardener will be responsible for managing 10 acres of gardens, involving overseeing a large greenhouse, which is waiting to be developed and put to use. The estate is kept organically as possible with plenty of organic material. The gardener will focus on growing vegetables, fruit trees, and cut flowers to enhance the estate’s sustainability and charm. Additionally, the estate features a walled garden that is yet to be developed, offering a fantastic opportunity for collaboration with the owners in bringing the space to life.
Key responsibilities for the Sole Gardener will include a variety of horticultural tasks, such as lawn mowing, hedge trimming, and pruning shrubs to maintain a healthy and attractive appearance throughout the year. The role also includes the upkeep of flower beds by planting, weeding, and ensuring that the gardens remain vibrant and well-maintained across all seasons. The gardener will take responsibility for the overall health and appearance of all areas on the estate. In addition to core gardening duties, the gardener will occasionally be required to walk the owners’ dogs and care for them when the owners are away. The role will also include being a key holder and the weekly task of taking out and bringing in the bins, ensuring that the estate remains tidy and well-kept
The ideal candidate will have horticultural knowledge and experience, with a strong commitment to maintaining high standards in all aspects of garden care. The estate has an excellent track record of staff retention and values the contribution of dedicated individuals who take pride in maintaining the estate’s enduring quality. The ideal candidate will have a proactive approach, demonstrating the ability to work collaboratively within the teams and offer support when needed. Additionally, they should be prepared to carry out minor DIY tasks as required.
This full-time, permanent position comes with a two-bedroom property on the estate, (covered in a separate agreement). The accommodation is suitable for small family. Pets are welcome.
The position includes 20 days of annual leave, plus an additional 8 paid public and bank holidays. The successful candidate will be subject to reference checks and a DBS check.
