Skilled Gardener
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to join a beautiful private estate based near East Grinstead, West Sussex. This is an exciting position for an experienced Skilled Gardener with enthusiasm and drive to work on a diverse garden to a high horticultural standard.
The private estate covers 180-acres in its entirety and consists of woodland, fields and a 4-acre private garden which is set on a hill which boasts incredible views of the neighbouring countryside. Within the formal gardens are expansive lawns, a kitchen garden, a large fruit cage, herb beds and a wonderful recently restored Victorian greenhouse which is home to exotic edibles. Other elements include raised beds, orchard and a tennis court.
The property owners have also recently installed a natural swimming pond and have brought in a garden designer to help redevelop and create some more imaginative planting schemes. The owners are very fond of their garden and are happy to invest in the development of new areas on the estate so future generations can enjoy the beautiful and diverse garden. Based on the edge of a former quarry, future plans for the garden include the installation of a multi-stage waterfall on a large cliff edge.
The Skilled Gardener position will focus on the high-level maintenance of the gardens as well as assisting with any future developments. The successful applicant will report into the Head Gardener and will work alongside them and one other part time gardener. As part of the small and close-knit team everyone gets stuck in, therefore additional estate duties are a requirement of the role; this will include, but is not limited to, feeding the chickens, gutter clearance, pressure washing, and tree clearance.
The Skilled Gardener will have excellent plant knowledge, a well-developed understanding of pest and disease control and experience in using a variety of garden machinery, of which there is a full range. Readiness to work in a very hands-on manner with the utmost flexibility is essential. A Chainsaw licence is required for this role as is PA1 & PA6 Spraying certificates and due to the rural locality and no public transport available, a driving licence is essential.
SALARY: Up to £32,000 depending on experience
