An exciting opportunity has become available for a self-motivated and driven Senior Gardener on an incredible estate near Haverhill in Suffolk. The senior gardener will work closely with a well known garden designer on restoring the gardens and enhancing its incredible features as well as managing and maintaining thereafter. The position is full time and on a permanent basis.

The 13-acre historic gardens surrounding the grade II listed property is part of a large country sports-based estate and has two 200-meter canals running through it. The banks have beech hedges to one side and are planted with daffodils and Narcisi on the other. There are extensive lawns at the front and back and closer to the house are colour themes herbaceous borders – one substantially long border and 7 other borders including shrub borders and a lovely rose garden maintained in a natural border style underplanted with complimentary perennials and low shrubs to extend the flowering season. The large walled kitchen garden was redeveloped, and vegetables are grown on rotation to supply the house. There is an orchard in need of restoration and a wildflower meadow that is currently being created. Also included is a wild parkland, ha-ha borders, greenhouse, cold frames filled with cuttings and large fruit cages for growing raspberries, currents, strawberries, plums, cherries and apricots, swimming pool and tennis court.

The Senior Gardener must have excellent plant knowledge as well as a genuine hunger and excitement for creating stunning and unique gardens. The successful applicant will work to a high horticultural standard to continue to improve the borders, keep the kitchen garden productive and maintain the greenhouse and the different areas of the garden. There is a part time gardener who will assist the successful candidate with maintaining the gardens.

Applicants should ideally have a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification combined with excellent plant and tree knowledge and previous experience working on private estates.  Experience growing fruit and vegetables as well as specialist pruning is required for the role. Ability to operate a range of garden machinery and good craft skills are also desirable for the role. A full UK driving licence is essential.

The position is open to candidates looking for a live in or live out position. Accommodation can be provided on site and partners, children and pets are welcome.
