Senior Gardener
A new opportunity has arisen for a Senior Gardener to play a key role in the ongoing development and enhancement of a private estate in Buckinghamshire, following the retirement of the previous incumbent. The position will involve day-to-day hands-on leadership and supervision of one undergardener. Applications are sought from experienced and academically qualified gardeners with a desire to take on a varied role.
The gardens are set within a historic deer park. Around the house there are five acres of formal gardens with ponds, mixed boarders, lawns, a kitchen garden and glass houses. The garden then spreads out to include a small vineyard, fruit trees, a woodland garden, lakes, and a wildflower meadow, with mature and specimen trees throughout, covering over 32-acres in total.
The successful candidate will work under the Estate Manager and alongside the owner with a view to developing new areas of the garden and maintaining the established areas to a high standard. The Senior Gardener will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the garden and supervision of one undergardener. They will work closely with the owner to develop a vision for the future and bring the garden to life. The Senior Gardener may also be required to work with the wider estate team on larger projects where necessary.
Applicants must be excellent communicators and be enthusiastic and adventurous in their outlook. Good experience in all areas of garden management is essential, to include but not limited to the following:
- Strong plant identification skills
- Propagation
- Glasshouse work
- Kitchen Gardening
- Project & design management
- Operation and basic maintenance of a range of garden machinery.
Academic qualifications are not essential, but the ideal applicant would be academically qualified to RHS Level 2 or above, as well as having spray and chainsaw certification. Demonstrable experience of garden management on private estates at sole, Senior or Head Gardener level is desired.
SALARY: Circa £35,000 DOE
