An exciting opportunity has become available for an experienced and motivated Senior Gardener to join a friendly team on an incredible private garden and estate in Aberdeen.

The stunning 40-acre garden is part of a wider estate with over 100 highland cows on site. The gardens were first laid out formally in the 1990s and have gradually been developed to a high horticultural standard and continue to evolve to date. Divided into different themes, the garden consists of extensive lawns, a tropical house, formal gardens, polytunnels for seasonal plants and growing from cuttings, 4-acre walled garden, Japanese garden, fountain garden and to the front of the house herbaceous beds. The gardens are well established with some potential planting projects in mind and have recently opened up through Scotland’s Garden Scheme. Throughout the years, the team have planted half a million trees on site.

The successful candidate should have excellent horticultural knowledge, as well as experience in hands on estate gardening throughout the year with ideally proven supervisory experience. The position is full time, and the senior gardener will work with a team of 3 gardening staff, and a groundsman; coordinate with external contractors and support students and volunteers.

The Senior Gardener will be expected to lead by example and maintain the grounds to the highest horticultural standards throughout the seasons and have a sound understanding of general garden machinery, their uses and maintenance. They should be willing to undertake training as required and qualifications in spraying (PA1 and PA6), hedge-cutting and chainsaw use would be an advantage. They should have a comprehensive understanding of the relevant Health and Safety Regulations. References will be required.

Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills, be self-motivated and capable of working as part of a team, have a valid driving license and be comfortable around animals.

SALARY:  Up to £38,000 DOE
