  • Full Time
  • Live Out
  • Kent
  • Salary: £26,000 - £29,000 DOE

A lovely opportunity has arisen for a Maintenance Gardener to join a private estate in a village on the outskirts of Ashford in Kent. The charming 3-acre gardens surround a grade II listed, Kentish farm house built in the 16th century, with an additional 4-acres of paddocks. The formal gardens are made up of a variety of sections, including extensive formal lawns, herbaceous borders and shrubberies, decorative topiary, and a story-book style vegetable garden.

The Maintenance Gardener will be responsible for maintaining the gardens to a high standard, through duties including, but not limited to, the weekly mowing of formal lawns, tending to the formal gardens, planting, weeding and hedge cutting. Knowledge of a variety of plants, shrubs and trees is necessary, along with an understanding of specialist pruning techniques, to care for the roses throughout the gardens.

Additional handyman tasks include chopping logs and kindling, fetching coal for the house and repairing fences. Also on the estate are chicken runs, pathways and driveways, and water features, which the gardener will need to maintain.

The successful candidate will ideally have experience with using and maintaining a range of gardening tools and machinery such as mowers, strimmers and hedge trimmers. Spraying and chainsaw certificates would be advantageous, and a DBS check will be required for the role. A driving license is desirable, but not essential, as long as applicants can reliably commute to the position.

The working hours for the role 8:30am until 5pm, and the holiday entitlement is 20 days plus bank holidays, to be taken between October and March, with two weeks being used over the Christmas period.
