Situated in 42 acres of landscaped grounds adjacent to the River Thames in Fulham, The Hurlingham Club is recognised as one of the world’s finest private member clubs. Since its opening in 1869, The Hurlingham Club’s croquet and tennis lawns, botanical gardens and stately Georgian Clubhouse, have made it a sought-after destination for exclusive sporting and social activities.

Department

The Grounds Team are part of the Estates Department and are made up of 29 professional and highly motivated individuals who pride themselves on the maintenance and upkeep of the prestigious grounds, including over a hectare of flowers, shrubs and ornamental lawns. It is through the efforts of the Grounds team that the Club’s members are rewarded year on year with award winning sports surfaces and stunning season changing flowerbeds.

The Role

As Head Gardener you will lead a team of eight, including one seasonal worker and one apprentice. You will work closely with the Grounds Manager and the rest of the team. You will work Monday to Friday, 39 hours a week, over five days with regular weekend work required.

This is a fixed term role; the ideal candidate will ideally be available for approximately 14 months.

Typical duties will include:

  • To be responsible for, and develop, specific areas of the Club gardens.
  • To organise and ensure the smooth running of the Gardens team and to chair and attend meetings in this capacity as required.
  • To supervise the Gardens team on a day-to-day basis.
  • To train members of the team in specific skills and new practises relevant to their duties.
  • To undertake all horticultural duties to ensure that the Club gardens are maintained and developed to a high standard as directed by the Grounds Manager.
  • To support the department as a whole by providing assistance in all other areas in which the department is involved.

Our Ideal Candidate

Candidates will embody our Club values; excellence, responsibility and courtesy. The ideal candidate will hold a National Diploma in Horticulture or equivalent, along with NPTC PA2 and PA6, CS 10 and CS 16 Certificates of Competence. You will have training and experience in landscaping, manual handling, risk assessments, health & safety and task allocation. You will have experience in a similar role and setting.
