Website English Country Gardeners

An experienced Head Gardener is sought after on a full time and permanent basis for a beautiful private estate situated in a Buckinghamshire village. The estate is comprised of a large historic Victorian mansion with formal lawns and gardens (5 acres) plus woodland and tenanted farmland totalling 110 acres. There is a sizeable walled garden with swimming pool, tennis court, and a working kitchen and flower garden.  There are several wooded areas that have been brought back in hand with further tree and shrub planting planned for the future.

The family has lived on the estate for 21 years and has lovingly restored the house and grounds to their former glory. There are a significant number of mature specimen trees that add to the ambience of the grounds. There is a full time Estate Manager and Under Gardener.

The successful applicant will have substantial practical experience of managing and maintaining extensive grounds and gardens. This is a hands-on role which requires not only strong physical attributes but the ability to lead and communicate effectively with co-workers. It will be a key requirement that the candidate can plan and implement seasonal works programmes as well as delegate duties to the Under Gardener. With the potential to further development the garden (planting trees and shrubs, landscaping, new flower beds, etc.) that will ensure that the job is varied and interesting.   However, it requires being able to plan in advance, and have a structured daily and weekly works programme.   The owner takes a keen interest in the estate development and will assist in planning.

Academic qualifications are preferred but not essential. The candidate should be skilled at operating and maintaining garden machinery, and have the requisite spray certificates, chainsaw and driving licence.

The hours of work are seasonal – high season: 8:00 am or earlier until 5:00 pm. Low season: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (daylight hours). One hour break for lunch. Annual leave is four weeks with no more than two weeks to be taken consecutively unless agreed with the employer.

There is a dedicated 3-bedroom bungalow within the estate for the Head Gardener at a rental fee of £500 per month. The bungalow has a self-contained sun terrace, glass house and rear garden, with immediate access to the grounds.

SALARY:        Circa £40,000 per annum
