Head Gardener required for Mediterranean Garden in a private home in the Balearics. Formal garden, orchards, wild gardens, forestry, and productive olive groves.

Beautiful, cherished landscapes and garden created 20 years ago. The role requires a candidate with a scope and vision for on-going changes with a vision to create one of the finest gardens on the island.

The candidate must love, improve, and project new ideas for climate change and enhance the beauty and history of the gardens, with a complete passion for the land and a sensitivity to nature.

In addition, the Head Gardener must provide leadership, mentoring and support to the Garden team, and will have a shared responsibility for the development, maintenance, and progress of the Estate gardens.
Love and care of animals is essential. There are two donkeys and a rescued sheep dog on the grounds.

The successful applicant will be required to fit well within a small team, ensuring that the gardens, lawns, orchards, wild gardens, and forestry are presented and maintained to the highest standards. The applicant will have a recognised qualification. Experience of working experience and interest in both climate change, drought and bringing the estate to an organic level. The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills and a practical ability with plenty of energy and a willingness to become involved in a hands-on role with the current team.

The Head Gardener will be responsible for leading a team in maintaining and rejuvenating the gardens, with the potential to develop some areas. Key aspects include a productive vegetable garden and greenhouse, a rose garden, herbaceous beds and borders and a maze of oleander.

There is an interesting mix of native and oriental plants and trees in the gardens, and so the right candidate will have excellent plant knowledge. Experience with kitchen gardening and propagating is required, as well as specialist pruning techniques, and an understanding of organic practices. The ability to lead and inspire others is desired, with an understanding of how to prepare plans and manage an estate garden through the seasons.

The estate has a well-equipped tool shed and machine stores with sitting room / kitchen and shower facilities for garden staff. The ideal candidate will have experience with a variety of machinery and equipment. A driving license is essential due to the rural location, and the required use of a vehicle on site. Applicants will have experience in a similar setting working on a diverse garden and horticultural qualifications would be necessary.

This is a full-time position, Monday to Friday.

Start Date: Immediate

Annual leave entitlement is 25 days and the salary offered is circa £35,000 depending on experience. Single person live in accommodation on the estate and a car is provided.
