A rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced and qualified gardener to play a key role in a beautiful private garden, designed by Arne Maynard. This opportunity would suit a keen hands-on horticulturist with demonstrable experience in a similar role in a private estate garden.
The property encompasses 40-acres in total, with formal garden areas comprising a large orchard, yew topiary, box parterres, pleached beech trees, a large pond with water features, expansive lawns, mature trees and mixed/herbaceous borders throughout.
The successful applicant will join an existing small garden team and will be responsible for managing and maintaining the formal garden areas to a high horticultural standard. The opportunity to assist with maintenance of the wider estate exists where necessary, which provides variation to the work and the opportunity to learn new skills. The gardener will be responsible for liaising with existing grounds team, planning and intermeshing projects. He / She will quantify and cost plants, materials and tools for purchase as well as monitor processes and results which will include flagging issues and providing options for improvement. It is important that records are maintained at all times.
Applicants should possess an academic horticultural qualification; ideally at RHS level 2 or above, spray certificates (PA1/PA6) or the willingness to acquire the ticket as training can be provided and/or extensive hands-on experience in large private gardens. The ideal candidate will have good technical gardening knowledge including species-specific pruning techniques, experience with herbaceous borders, knowledge of seasonal garden management considerations, good plant identification skills, competence with a range of garden tools and machinery, and good physical fitness.
The successful candidate will have a keen eye for detail, will work to a consistently high standard and will be self-motivated whilst being able to adopt a flexible approach to their work. He / She will be able to prioritise and plan work efficiently and time plan daily, weekly and monthly tasks effectively. The ability to undertake basic machinery maintenance would be beneficial but is not essential.
A full UK driving licence and your own transport are required in order to commute to and from work as the property is located rurally. A positive attitude and good sense of humour are essential, as the wellbeing of the team and general atmosphere on the estate are important to owners and existing employees.
