Assistant Gardener

This job role as an Assistant Gardener / Estate worker offers an exciting opportunity to be a part of an exciting company which continues to grow and lead the way in estate and garden management.

The Assistant Gardener / Estate Worker will have good communication and customer service skills, positive attitude, self-motivated and with high attention to detail. It is important that they are reliable, punctual and well-presented.

Applicants may be in the early stages of their career, with either a horticultural qualification or 2 years of experience working on a private estate.  Physical fitness and a willingness to work in adverse weather conditions is essential of all applicants as the role will involve outdoor duties for the majority of the time.  Candidates with a basic understanding and experience in garden maintenance are encouraged to apply, however applicants must have demonstrable experience of working on private estates, or similar sites where grounds/estate maintenance played a primary focus of the position.  The successful candidate must have a strong work ethic, a personable and trustworthy character, and must possess an ability to solve problems and apply practical and pragmatic solutions where necessary.  A full driving licence is required of all applicants. A current full UK clean driving licence is essential for a manual vehicle.

Skills required for the role;

  • Competence with garden machinery/equipment use and maintenance such as tractors, trailers, chippers, chainsaws and pedestrian mowers with accreditation as required for Health and Safety compliance
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety & Compliance requirements.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • To ensure that the mechanical condition and security of vehicles and machinery used in operations is maintained in a safe and secure manner and that any defects, damage or breakdowns are reported promptly
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and polite manner with colleagues, clients and members of the public.
  • To work outdoors at all times of the year in all weather conditions
  • To understand work requirements and work to deadlines.

Other preferable skills are UK drivers’ licence with BE entitlement (trailer) and first aid.

Where the employee is qualified to drive company vehicles and tow company trailers, he/she may be required to carry out the following additional duties:

  • To drive any Company vehicle in accordance with the relevant legal requirements and Company procedures.
  • To clean vehicles and plant assigned to you and keep the vehicle in a tidy condition.
  • To ensure vehicles and plant are prepared ready for out of hours emergencies.
  • To perform minor maintenance tasks on the vehicles, as necessary.
  • Ability to undertake basic vehicle checks and to identify maintenance needs.
