An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate and knowledgeable Gardener to take responsibility of two acres of beautiful private gardens and six acres of woodland, surrounding an impressive country house in Hampshire. This is a highly individual and characterful garden, offering a diverse range of horticultural areas and the opportunity for the successful candidate to take real ownership of the gardens and their ongoing development.

The gardens are well established and have been thoughtfully created as a series of different areas and garden rooms, each offering its own character and horticultural interest. The grounds include formal lawns, well-maintained flower beds and borders, a dedicated rose garden, mature shrubs and hedging, gravel areas, terraces, greenhouses, a productive vegetable garden, orchards, and numerous individual features throughout the estate.

The garden offers an excellent balance between formal and productive horticulture. The formal areas require a high standard of presentation, with well-maintained lawns, flower beds, roses, shrubs and hedges providing structure throughout the garden. The productive areas include a small kitchen garden producing a variety of fruit and vegetables. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing beds, planting, nurturing crops, harvesting produce, and maintaining the overall presentation of the area. The gardens are not managed on a strictly organic basis, although environmentally conscious practices are adopted wherever possible.

The small greenhouses provide additional horticultural interest and form an important part of the role. The successful candidate will be responsible for keeping the greenhouses maintained and productive, managing plants and crops throughout the seasons and ensuring the growing areas are kept in excellent condition.

One of the most appealing aspects of the estate is its completely individual character. The wider grounds feature a young arboretum of approx. 6 acres.

There is additional support in the garden, with another gardener working one day each week and a contractor also undertakes the larger-scale mowing of driveways and rough grass areas, allowing the Gardener to concentrate their time and expertise on the ornamental and productive gardens. The estate also features a large duck pond, and the successful candidate will be responsible for feeding and caring for the ducks and chickens on the property.

Alongside the horticultural responsibilities, the successful candidate will act as the main point of contact on the estate when required. This will include liaising with contractors, communicating with the estate office regarding house maintenance, assisting with swimming pool maintenance, arranging vehicle servicing and MOT appointments using the estate vehicle, and responding to fire and intruder alarm callouts when the owners are away.

The ideal candidate will be a genuine plantsman or woman with a passion for gardening and strong practical horticultural skills. Formal qualifications are not essential; the client is much more interested in finding someone who understands plants, enjoys working outdoors and takes real pride in maintaining a private garden to a high standard. You should be able to work independently, manage your own workload, and communicate confidently with the owners and estate office. A full UK driving licence is essential.

An attractive two-bedroom semi-detached cottage is provided on the estate and offers a large kitchen, living room, conservatory, downstairs cloakroom, private outside seating area which is next to a field and an area of lawn, and parking. Council tax and oil-fired heating are paid by the employer.

SALARY:        £35,000 – depending on experience
