Gardener/Groundsperson | Prestigious Private Estate | West Oxfordshire
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an ambitious and motivated Gardener/Groundsperson to join a small gardening team on a prestigious private estate in West Oxfordshire. Working closely with the existing gardening team and wider estate staff, the successful candidate will play an important role in the year-round maintenance and care of the gardens surrounding the main house, ancillary buildings and additional family residences, ensuring the highest horticultural standards are consistently achieved.
The estate comprises an extensive rural landscape incorporating arable and livestock farming, established woodlands, approximately 150 acres of parkland and several residential properties. The private gardens surrounding the main house extend to approximately 8 acres and feature a variety of traditional country house garden elements, including a walled garden, rose garden, extensive topiary, herbaceous borders, formal lawns, a lake and a greenhouse. A small kitchen garden also produces a selection of fruit and vegetables for the main house. In addition, the estate includes three further substantial properties and several community gardens, which, although less formal in design, are maintained to an equally high standard.
The main responsibilities of the Gardener/Groundsperson will include general garden maintenance, herbaceous border care, grass cutting, pruning, hedge trimming, strimming, spraying, lake management, leaf clearance and the upkeep of garden furniture, ornaments and other features throughout the estate. Applicants will ideally hold valid PA1 and PA6 pesticide application certificates, alongside a recognised chainsaw certificate, or the willingness to obtain as training can be provided. A formal horticultural qualification would be advantageous but is not essential. However, a genuine passion for horticulture, a proactive attitude and a commitment to maintaining beautiful gardens and grounds are essential for this role.
The client is committed to providing a friendly, supportive and rewarding working environment, with a strong emphasis on helping the successful candidate develop their horticultural skills and practical experience. This position offers an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build their career within the country house garden and private estate sector, with access to relevant professional training and opportunities for personal development.
The position offers a 39-hour working week, with hours of 7.30 am to 4.00 pm Monday to Thursday and 7.30 am to 3.00 pm on Fridays. Occasional weekend flexibility will be required to prepare the estate and gardens for specific events, although this will be infrequent.
Please note that the successful candidate will be required to provide references and complete a DBS check at offer stage.
