Groundskeeper – Private Estate – Northumberland
An incredible and unique opportunity has become available for a practical and enthusiastic Estate Groundskeeper to take day-to-day responsibility for the care, maintenance and presentation of a beautiful private estate in Northumberland. The 100-acre private estate is set within a diverse rural landscape incorporating woodland, gardens and grounds, lakes and a lagoon along the river.
The Estate Groundskeeper will play an important role in maintaining the presentation and practical condition of this varied landscape throughout the year, working across both the formal and more natural areas of the estate. The Groundskeeper will take pride in how the estate looks, have a good eye for detail, notice what needs doing and be happy to take ownership of practical work independently.
The role will involve maintaining lawns, verges, drives, entrances, paths, lake surrounds, and other guest-facing spaces to a high standard. Regular gardening and grounds maintenance duties will include mowing, strimming, edging, hedge cutting, weeding, vegetation management, grass repair and seasonal maintenance.
The Estate Groundskeeper will also undertake general practical maintenance, including work on paths, gates, fencing, signs, drainage, access routes and minor repairs. The role will involve safely operating and maintaining a range of grounds machinery, including ride-on and pedestrian mowers, strimmers, brushcutters, hedge trimmers, blowers, trailers and other appropriate equipment.
Regular estate and security patrols will form part of the role, with responsibility for promptly reporting any maintenance, safety, access or security issues. The successful candidate will work positively with the contractors, guests, neighbours and members of the public, maintain a straightforward daily work log and take ownership of jobs through to completion.
Applicants will have practical gardening and grounds maintenance experience, confidence using commercial grounds machinery, practical maintenance skills and a strong eye for presentation and detail. Initiative, reliability and the ability to work independently are important, together with good organisation and communication skills.
You should have a practical, positive and flexible approach, be comfortable working outdoors throughout the year and hold a full UK driving licence. Experience working within a private estate, country estate, large garden or similar rural environment would be advantageous.
Experience of working around lakes and rivers, PA1/PA6 spraying qualifications, chainsaw, woodchipper or brushcutter certification, and experience with ATVs, tractors, mini-diggers or trailers/towing would be advantageous and further training may be provided where appropriate. As with First Aid or water-safety training, previous experience maintaining the grounds of an estate, and horticultural or other relevant land-based qualifications would also be beneficial.
As a guest-facing private estate, discretion, reliability and professional conduct are important. The successful candidate will work as part of a small team and should be comfortable working independently as well as alongside the Owners, Team members, contractors and other estate staff.
Some flexibility in working hours is required for seasonal work and estate requirements. Any time off in lieu must be agreed in advance. Any offer will be subject to satisfactory references, proof of right to work in the UK and verification of relevant licences or qualifications.
