Sole Gardener

  • Full Time Live In Live Out PRIVATE AD
  • Circa £30,000 DOE
  • Northamptonshire

After 10 years service, our wonderful current gardener is leaving us for a change in career. So, an exciting opportunity has become available on our 400 year old private country estate near Kettering for an experienced, friendly and motivated sole gardener.

This is a varied role involving the responsibility and maintenance for our beautiful woodland garden, some more formal garden areas and also our ancient walled garden where we grow organic fruit and vegetables for the family. The garden also contains water features and ponds. There are two traditional glass houses in the walled garden.

The role would require strong plant knowledge and extensive horticultural knowledge. Work would include planting; pruning fruit trees, roses and shrubs; weeding; leaf collection; general lawn maintenance (excluding mowing); sowing and producing fruit and veg for the table; propagating, pest control and compost management.

We would like candidates to have a minimum of 3 years’ experience working on a diverse private estate and ideally hold a level 2 RHS certificate or equivalent. Spraying PA1 & PA6 as well as a chainsaw licence is advantageous. The successful candidate will need to be familiar with garden machinery and how to take care of it. They will also be required occasionally to work with our estate manager, clearing gutters and helping prepare for occasional estate functions for example.

Applicants should have a positive attitude and be conscientious in their work. This role will require the applicant to predominantly work on their own, so an ability to manage their own time efficiently and be punctual is essential. We are always looking for new ideas to develop and improve all aspects of the garden so having a creative flair would be important. Although this is a sole gardener position, the successful candidate would have the support of a small but friendly wider estate team.

There could be an opportunity to rent a property off the estate in the village on a separate rental agreement
