A rare opportunity to leave your mark on an inspirational garden in the Lake District.
Gardener (permanent position) 30 hours per week / 0.8FTE: £26,298 (pro rata £32,873)
Higham Hall is a Grade II listed neo-Gothic manor set in c.6 acres of landscaped gardens with established woodland including a number of specimen trees, a pond fed by a natural stream, and the remains of a kitchen garden. Situated above Bassenthwaite Lake with expansive views of the northern Lake District Fells, it is within easy reach of Cockermouth and Keswick.
You will inherit a garden that has been managed for many years in a traditional manner and is in need of a sensitive redesign. We are looking for someone with the expertise, vision and ambition to develop and implement a new plan for the grounds incorporating enhanced habitats for wildlife and for people, working closely with nature and the site. You will be passionate about sustainability and biodiversity, and able to embed these principles in the management of the gardens. You will have strong horticultural knowledge and relevant practical experience. This is a key role within a small but dedicated team, with sole responsibility for the management and maintenance of the grounds. In practice you will often work alone, supported by a small team of volunteers.
Public engagement is also key and we expect you to play a part in this. Higham is an educational trust supporting lifelong learning in the arts and humanities through workshops, residential courses and retreats. We welcome over 3,000 students a year and would like to make the garden an integral part of our unique learning environment, improving access and developing courses that make use of the gardens.
