Experienced Gardener
A wonderful opportunity has arisen for an Experienced Gardener to take on the responsibility for managing a mature 4-acre private NGS garden, located approximately 6 miles away from Haslemere, Surrey. The established garden contains shrubs, roses, ericaceous plants, a kitchen garden and orchard, greenhouse, hedging, topiary, lawns and a small pond. The position would suit an experienced gardener with good plant knowledge and the ability to schedule and prioritise jobs.
The owner is particularly keen to employ a passionate plants person to take responsibility for managing the plant collection, as most of the maintenance such as mowing, leaf collecting, hedge cutting, is undertaken by a part-time gardener. Applicants must have an open and positive attitude, such that they are willing to undertake other duties when the owner is away, i.e. basic maintenance of the swimming pool, looking after the domestic animals (cats & chickens), general security of the house, and occasional airport runs. For the latter of course, it is essential that applicants hold a full UK driving licence.
Applicants must demonstrate hands-on experience of working in a large private garden combined with a comprehensive plant knowledge, a keen interest in garden layout and a familiarity with most garden practices e.g growing from seed, propagating, spraying, pruning and especially winter care of tender plants. A recognised horticultural qualification would be desirable, though not essential if evidence of adequate experience can be provided. The appointed candidate should have the ability to schedule work and prioritise jobs in a proactive rather than reactive way and will liaise with the owner regarding specific requests involving general garden development. The garden is continually evolving as plants age and weather conditions change so managing the beds and displays requires a good eye, excellent attention to detail and a desire to achieve high standards especially before and NGS or private group openings. Good organisational skills and a good understanding of Health and Safety issues would be necessary.
This position is offered with a two-bedroom cottage on site, with all bills paid aside from Council Tax. The accommodation is ideally suited to a single person or couple, though is not considered to be large enough for a family.
