Head Gardener

An exciting opportunity has a risen for an experienced Head Gardener to use their horticultural knowledge and experience to maintain and restore a beautiful and historic estate in rural West Oxfordshire. The Estate includes large formal and informal gardens some of which are currently being restored, Capability Brown Park, lake, and woodlands.  Responsibilities are wide ranging but include managing the garden team and liaising with the household staff, farm, and tenants.

The Head Gardener will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and development of the diverse gardens and will manage a small team of gardeners. This is a live-in position, and the Head Gardener will also collaborate closely with our design team and have occasional security responsibilities.

The main duties will include garden Management, taking overall responsibility for the management, development, and maintenance of all gardens on the estate, including formal and informal lawns, shrub and herbaceous borders, and tenant cottage gardens. The Head gardener will be leading a small team and needs to motivate, provide guidance, training, and support to provide high standards of work. The role will include general maintenance (Performing routine garden maintenance tasks, such as pruning, weeding, planting, watering, and pest control), collaboration with estate management and the design team to develop garden designs, planting plans, and long-term garden improvement strategies. As well as managing garden equipment, tools, and supplies, ensuring they are well-maintained and stocked. With regards to health and safety they will be responsible for implementing and enforcing safety procedures to ensure the well-being of the gardening team and estate visitors. The candidate will also be assisting with budget management for the gardening department, and liaising with tenants to help with any gardening needs,

Applicants will have previous experience working on a large country garden, have strong horticultural knowledge, excellent leadership and communication skills, proficiency in using garden equipment and tools and a real passion and commitment to maintaining the highest standards of garden presentation.

The successful candidate will be a dedicated and experienced Head Gardener able to lead the horticultural team and ensure the continued excellence of the gardens. The estate prides itself on being 99% organic and is looking to continue and improve the organic approach.

SALARY:        Circa £35,000
