Senior Gardener

An exciting opportunity has become available for an ambitious and skilled gardener to be involved with the continuing development of one of Irelands finest private estates.

The 1000-acre property has many interesting features and a unique microclimate. Features include many historic elements with the need to restore many of the naturalistic and formal parklands and gardens, including meadows, woodlands, rides, extensive walled gardens, perennial planting, arboretum, formal hedging and lawns. The owner is looking to restore and develop the gardens to a very high standard and fine attention to detail.

Ideally candidates will be creative and innovative with enthusiasm for ongoing and future projects, whilst having a sensitive approach towards the historic and biodiverse elements of the estate, garden, and landscape. Applications are particularly welcome from candidates with a broad knowledge and passion for plants, with an understanding of current trends in planting design, along with a knowledge of historic garden management. The role will require overseeing the garden staff and additional contractors so experience managing a team is required.

The successful applicant will be responsible for planning, overseeing, and implementing the seasonal operations throughout the gardens. Overseeing the existing small team of 2 full time and seasonal part time staff. Moving forward the gardens will require someone to be invested in the development and improvement of the landscape working closely with the owner and garden consultant. The Senior Gardener will need to liaise with the household staff and provide seasonal produce and cut flowers on a regular basis. The role will also require good organisation and planning skills to ensure records are maintained for the garden, machinery, and health and safety. The role will require management of the gardens budget and the development of a budget to allow for a 5-year plan.

Applicants will ideally hold spray tickets (PA1/PA6) and a chainsaw licence would be beneficial, as is experience with a wide range of gardening machinery including compact tractors.  Candidates should be willing and able to undertake the additional caretaking duties when required. Accommodation is provided with this role with council tax paid by the employer and other bills payable by the occupants.

SALARY:        Circa €30,000 depending on experience
