Sole Gardener
A rare opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener to oversee the continued maintenance and development of a stunning 20-acre estate near Shipston-on-Stour. The expansive estate is comprised of both formal and informal areas, with 3 acres of formal gardens surrounding the house, alongside a 3-acre wildflower meadow. The remaining acreage is fielded areas, which are grazed by sheep.
The gardens are mainly comprised of formal lawns, separated by a ha-ha, alongside extensive formerly clipped topiary in a multitude of different styles. Additionally, there are densely planted and cloudy box borders surrounding the house, greenhouse, and leisure complex. The gardens are maintained to a very high standard currently and the owners have future plans to increase the number of borders, while transforming the current ornamental area surrounding the greenhouse into a kitchen garden.
The owners are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Sole Gardener to continue to maintain the estate to the very highest standard and future development of the gardens, having a creative eye and attention to detail to get the very best out of the picturesque gardens. Alongside this maintenance, the role will also include planting, pruning, feeding, and training of a variety of plants, with extensive knowledge of topiary essential for this position. Additionally, there is a long serving part time gardener who is based at the estate between 2 and 3 days per week, to assist with general maintenance tasks.
Applicants must have demonstrable experience in a similar private estate setting, while demonstrating a positive, hardworking attitude to manage their workload effectively throughout the seasons. Strong plant knowledge is essential, as well as pest and disease identification. A relevant horticultural qualification is desirable but not essential, with tickets such as PA1/PA6 and chainsaw certificates being advantageous, but again not essential. Candidates should be willing and able to undertake general garden handyman duties required of a Sole Gardener.
SALARY: £35,000 – £40,000
