Senior Gardener

  • Live Out
  • Up to £28,000 DOE
  • Shropshire

A very attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Gardener on a beautiful private estate near Ludlow in Shropshire for 4 days per week on a permanent basis.

The 8-acre garden is part of a large farming and shooting estate and contains specimen trees, a woodland walk, fernery, mixed beds and borders, and an ornamental and productive kitchen garden. The estate utilises the kitchen garden and glasshouses on site to propagate plants for the garden and for sale as well as grow heritage vegetables and cut flowers for the main house, local restaurant and florists.

The owner is a horticulturalist and is very passionate about their garden. They have a vision for the garden and are keen to bring onboard an experienced gardener to drive the garden forward. The gardens are open to the public a couple of times per year to raise money for charity and occasionally to private groups. The owner would like to increase this with time. The successful applicant will work closely with the owner when it comes to the development of the gardens and will manage two other gardeners who carry out the general maintenance on the estate allowing the Senior Gardener to focus on the finer horticultural aspects of the garden.

Applicants for this vacancy must have extensive hands-on experience working in a private or public garden with comprehensive knowledge of a range of garden plants and their maintenance.  They will preferably hold an academic horticultural qualification and spraying certificates as well as being someone with a love of gardening who takes pride in their work. A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing a large and diverse garden, with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and manage a team with willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

The Senior Gardener must be willing and able to carry out all aspects of estate gardening including pruning, plant propagation, planting, weeding, and general garden maintenance duties. Applicants should be competent with the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery. Possession of a chainsaw certificate would be beneficial, but not essential as contractors are engaged for the tree work.  Due to the rural locality of the property, a driving licence and own transport is essential.
