Leathermarket JMB are looking for an Assistant Gardener to contribute to the maintenance and development of gardens and green spaces on our estates.

The JMB is a tenant-managed housing organisation based in the vibrant community of Bermondsey, managing 1,600 properties on behalf of Southwark Council. Our patch is located between London Bridge and Tower Bridge, with all estates within easy walking distance of our friendly and welcoming office. You’ll be supported by our Estates Upkeep Manager and Head Gardener and benefit from an excellent salary and good range of benefits.

The ideal candidate will have:

Previous gardening experience is desirable but not essential. Ability to meet the physical demands of the role combined with a good approach are more important. Opportunities for development are available to the right candidate.

Purpose of the Job

To contribute to the maintenance of amenity garden areas on public housing estates to a consistently high standard.

Main Accountabilities

  1. Delivering a specified programme of green space watering across the JMB estates
  2. General gardening tasks including:
  • Dead heading and pruning
  • Weeding
  • Soft edging
  • Leaf clearance
  • Occasional grass-cutting
  1. Take responsibility for the health and safety of self and others at all times
  2. Communicate with residents politely and in a way that upholds the JMB’s reputation.
  3. Other reasonable tasks as defined by the manager or Head Gardener in line with the role remit. May occasionally be required to support with estates cleaning tasks.

Job Context

Actual tasks will vary according to the growing season.

This role is physically challenging that will require the postholder to be outside in various weather conditions, to lift, to bend, stretch, to stand or walk for much of the day.

Person Specification

Essential

  1. Able to meet the physical demands of the role, including:
  • Walking over landscaped terrain
  • lifting and moving hose pipes over short distances
  • carrying out gardening tasks and working outside in all weathers
  1. Hold an interest in gardening
  2. Demonstrably good teamwork skills
  3. Ability to self-motivate and prioritise own workload
  4. Professional and respectful to colleagues and residents
  5. Ability to handle occasional difficult situations with tact and diplomacy

Desirable

  1. Gardening experience
  2. Full clean driving licence
  3. Health and safety awareness

Terms and conditions:

Salary: £24,771 – £25,776 per annum
Hours:  Full time 36 hours per week (Monday to Friday plus occasional weekend work)
Annual Leave: 27 days per year plus bank holidays, rising to 31 days after 5 years service
