Assistant Head Gardener

An assistant head gardener is required to join the gardening team at Drummond Castle, Perthshire and assist the head gardener with the day to day management of the gardens team.

The gardens cover an area of approximately 12 acres and are open to the public seasonally. They are classed as the best example of a formal terraced garden in Scotland. Originating in the 17th century they have recently found renewed fame through appearing in the acclaimed Outlander television series. The gardens consist of a large parterre with seasonal bedding displays, terraces with herbaceous borders and roses, formal hedges and topiary, kitchen garden, glasshouses, lawns and woodland with many specimen trees.

The ideal candidate will be suitably qualified with significant practical experience in horticulture. Supervisory experience for the day to day management of a small team is a necessity along with excellent plant knowledge and competence with the use of a wide range of machinery. Knowledge of H&S legislation and good working practice are required along with the need to be punctual, flexible and hard working.

A competitive salary in the region of £20,000-£23,000 will be offered depending on experience, along with a generous contributory pension scheme and accommodation if required. Training will be provided to enable work within the gardens to be carried out as efficiently and safely as possible.
