Sole Gardener Required

An exciting opportunity has opened up for a qualified and experienced horticulturalist to join a historic estate in Somerset. The position is for a full time sole gardener with a view to expand later to a small team. They, therefore, must be well rounded with an excellent plant knowledge and the ability to be flexible, energetic and cooperative. The role is offered with a generous salary and accommodation, with all utility bills paid, in an on site detached one bedroom studio that has recently been refurbished, if this is required.

The Georgian house is set in forty acres with gardens made up of pleached hedging, topiary, herbaceous borders, an orchard, walled garden and greenhouses, as well as beautiful wild flower meadows, woodland, ponds and rills.

The role will include working closely with the owners in many exciting development projects, as well as being responsible for maintaining the garden to a high horticultural standard. The job will also include some basic animal care. The applicant must be self-motivated, proactive and proficient at organising their time, whilst being able to remain flexible in their approach to work. Good physical fitness and an artistic eye are required.

Spraying and chainsaw proficiency certificates are required, as well as experience of driving tractors and a range of garden machinery. Good horticultural knowledge and qualifications, including pruning of fruit trees and glasshouse propagation. Some experience of chemical-free garden management methodologies would be beneficial as we always strive to garden organically.

Hours: 40 a week, with some weekend work.

Salary: negotiable within the range of £25,000-£32,000 depending on experience and live in, live out situation.
