Assistant Gardener | Private Garden | Kingston upon Thames, Surrey
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Assistant Gardener to join a beautiful private garden in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey on a full time and permanent basis.
Working alongside and supporting the Head Gardener, the successful candidate will help maintain and continue to develop a newly redesigned 3.5-acre garden, featuring woodland areas, a kitchen garden, herbaceous borders and a swimming pool. This is an excellent opportunity for a junior-level gardener looking to develop their horticultural skills and gain valuable experience within a private estate.
The Assistant Gardener will support the Head Gardener with the maintenance and development of all areas of the garden, including the main garden, kitchen garden, pool garden, outer garden and terraces. Together, their responsibilities will include general garden maintenance, flowerbed preparation, weeding, pruning, lawn care, and the maintenance of perennials, climbers and shrubs. The role will also involve assisting with fruit tree pruning and training, orchard management, topiary and hedge maintenance, and the care and development of different garden borders. The successful candidate will help monitor plants for pests and diseases, maintain high horticultural standards, follow health and safety procedures, and contribute to ensuring the garden remains well presented throughout the year.
The successful candidate should be proactive, trustworthy, attentive to detail and willing to take pride in their work. The ability to work well alongside the Head Gardener, follow direction and manage allocated tasks efficiently is essential. A friendly and professional manner is important, as is the ability to work respectfully in a family environment with children present. Additional responsibilities will include assisting with swimming pool maintenance to ensure the area is kept clean, tidy and presentable, as well as helping coordinate with external contractors when required.
Applicants should have a genuine interest in horticulture, with some practical gardening experience and a willingness to develop their plant knowledge and horticultural skills. A relevant horticultural qualification would be advantageous but not essential, although enthusiasm and a strong desire to learn are equally important. Candidates should have a basic understanding of seasonal gardening requirements, comfortable using garden machinery and a willingness to undertake routine equipment maintenance. A full driving licence is required.
This is an exciting opportunity for an aspiring gardener to join a beautiful private garden in Kingston upon Thames, working closely with an experienced Head Gardener to support the ongoing maintenance and development of a diverse 3.5-acre garden. The role offers an excellent opportunity to build practical horticultural experience, develop specialist gardening skills and progress professionally within a private garden setting.
