A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener to join a well-presented, private estate in the heart of North Yorkshires ‘golden triangle’, where the property owners have a true passion for their gardens. Having recently invested in their gardens, the property owners are looking for an individual to come on board with a wealth of knowledge and experience, to effectively maintain and develop the estate.

This beautiful, grade II listed property sits within 2.5 acres of formal gardens, on a 10-acre estate, consisting of a small kitchen garden and orchard; large lawns; mature trees and shrubs; cloud pine and yew hedging topiary; and herbaceous borders – which are continually evolving. Additionally, there is a modest cut flower border which the property owners plan to expand; a Japanese garden with a small koi pond and a tropical garden containing palm trees and banana plants.

The gardens have a full irrigation system in place and a composting system. Two tool sheds on site provide a range of machinery and equipment to be used and maintained by the Sole Gardener, who should keep records of all maintenance. General maintenance of lawns and putting green is expected. On the wider estate there is an area of woodland, a recently refurbished lake and a developing wildflower meadow.

The Sole Gardener will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the gardens including the specialist pruning of the rose gardens and large wisteria frontage on the property. Applicants should have excellent plant knowledge, with the ability to work independently and take initiative in the planning and execution of their work throughout the year –  producing results in keeping with the high standards of the estate. There will be an additional expectation to perform security checks on the property in the owner’s absence.

There will be the requirement to work at heights, using a powered access lift, for hedge trimming, yew topiary and specialist pruning of wisteria, on which training can be provided.  Additionally, the Sole Gardener will be expected to use a ride-on mower.

Excellent communication skills are a must, with the ability to programme and liaise with specialist contractors where necessary. Applicants should hold a horticultural qualification, but those with extensive experience in a similar setting will be strongly considered. Chainsaw and PA1/6 spraying certificates would be advantageous and training can be provided. A DBS check will be required for the role.

The working hours for the position are 8am-4pm, Monday to Friday. On the rare occasion that weekend working is required, this can be taken back as time in lieu. The holiday entitlement is 28 days including bank holidays. Due to the necessary use of a vehicle on site, candidates must have a full driving licence. This vehicle can also be available for candidates to use when commuting to and from work.
