An exceptional opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled and experienced Head Gardener to join a long-standing team on a private estate in Dumfries, Scotland. The house itself was built in 1780, with Victorian, Edwardian and 20th century additions and the estate boasts plenty of character, including charming sculptures, a large walled garden, and a woodland walk.

The Head Gardener will be responsible for leading a team of three in maintaining and rejuvenating the formal gardens, with the potential to develop some areas. Key aspects include a productive vegetable garden and two greenhouses, a rose garden, herbaceous beds and borders, the care of indoor plants and regular collection of milk for the house. The gardens open once a year through Scotland’s Gardens Scheme, and gardening groups are welcome, by appointment, throughout the year.

There is an interesting mix of native and oriental plants and trees in the gardens, and so the right candidate will have excellent plant knowledge. Experience with kitchen gardening and propagation is required, as well as specialist pruning techniques, and an understanding of organic practices. The ability to lead and inspire others is desired, with an understanding of how to prepare plans and manage an estate garden through the seasons.

The estate has a well-equipped tool shed and the ideal candidate will have experience with a variety of machinery and equipment. A driving license is essential due to the rural location, and the required use of a vehicle on site. Applicants will have experience in a similar setting working on a diverse garden and horticultural qualifications would be advantageous as well as PA1/6 Spraying certificates.

This is a full-time position, Monday to Friday, with seasonal working hours.

Annual leave entitlement is 20 days, plus bank holidays and the salary offered is circa £38,000 depending on experience, with accommodation.

There is a 2 bedroom cottage on site with rent and council tax included and the candidate will be responsible for all other utilities. Families and children are welcome, and pets will be considered on an individual basis.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to work within a prestigious estate, contributing to its ongoing development, refinement, and beauty. As a member of a highly skilled team, you will play a vital role in shaping and maintaining a truly remarkable setting, combining your expertise with your passion for horticulture.
