A wonderful opportunity has arisen for a talented and enthusiastic Sole Gardener on a private garden in Bedale, Yorkshire. This stunning Grade II listed property is set within approximately 57 acres of parkland, featuring beautifully landscaped gardens and grounds with views over lakes and open fields. The main 5-acre garden includes a kitchen garden within a walled area, ha-has, formal ponds, expansive lawns, mixed borders, and a variety of mature trees.

The owners have lived at the property for the past nine years and have carefully redeveloped the gardens. Although the gardens are already well-established, they continue to evolve, and the owners are seeking a gardener with the enthusiasm and drive to further enhance the space. The successful candidate will be responsible for the garden’s routine maintenance and ongoing development on a full-time, permanent basis. During the winter months, the gardener will also assist with wood cutting and work around the lakes. While this is a sole position, the estate has a local groundsperson available to provide support and assist with maintenance.

Ideal candidates will possess a recognised horticultural qualification, solid horticultural knowledge, and practical gardening experience. Applicants should be physically fit and willing to take ownership of the garden’s care and ongoing development. Competence in the safe operations and maintenance of garden machinery including strimmer’s, sprayers, hedge cutters, mowers, garden/compact tractors and trailers, leaf blowers. Chainsaw and spraying certificates (PA1/PA6) would be beneficial.

The owners have two friendly dogs, a Dachshund and a Flat-Coat Retriever, and would appreciate a gardener who can look after them when they travel. Compensation for this is £25 per day over the weekend, with additional pay for longer durations.

On-site accommodation may be available in a two-bedroom gardener’s cottage, complete with a private small garden that the gardener would maintain in their own time. Dependents are welcome, and pets will be considered on a case-by-case basis. A full driving licence and personal transport are beneficial.

This is a wonderful opportunity to join a small, friendly team on a large, historically significant private estate, located in a picturesque part of the country, working for generous and welcoming owners.
