Dear Sir/Madam

I am a highly motivated and hard-working professional with a successful career as a gardener and I have also worked with equal success as a head gardener. I am keen to continue to work in private gardens, whilst immersing myself in an environment that has horticulture at its heart.

Having a keen eye for detail has enabled me to maintain extremely high standards which I used on a daily basis whilst working at RHS Garden Bridgewater. My responsibilities have included leading planting of the paradise garden designed by Tom Stuart Smith, designing and planting a hazel coppice, overseeing the wiring of the walled garden in order to grow trained fruit, to oversee unloading and planting of semi mature trees for the inner walled garden. I periodically work with small groups of volunteers on tasks such as weeding, cutting and burning Rhododendron ponticum and planting. I have also planned and coordinated community engagement projects such as working with National Citizenship Scheme participants. My design work at RHS Bridgewater includes areas of the kitchen garden, focusing on legumes and miscellaneous vegetables.

Whilst working at Gresgarth Hall I was responsible for the maintenance of the herbaceous borders, which included skills in brashing with natural supports such as hazel and birch achieving a practical yet natural look, weeding, cutting back of perennials, planting, dead-heading and dividing when and where needed. Having worked in many areas of the grounds I have found working in the herbaceous borders one of the most rewarding.

I also had responsibility for the running of the greenhouses at Gresgarth Hall. These are used for growing and propagating plants for the garden, but they are mainly used to grow tender plants which are then used on display in the private household, these include; an extensive collection of Pelargoniums, beautiful Brugmansia, Plectranthus and many more.

I was often asked to undertake other tasks around the garden such as grass cutting, using a range of mowers from pedestrian cylinder mowers to ride-on rotary mowers. Others tasks included hedge trimming, tree felling, tree pruning, occasional hard landscaping and other more physically demanding tasks.

As Head Gardener at Hay Carr Estate I was responsible for the other gardening staff; mainly in setting work and ensuring my high standards were met. I have also been a mentor to younger, less experienced gardeners, who have grown in confidence and shown greater pride in their work. I lead by example and I am willing to help any member of staff with their tasks, while having high expectations that jobs are finished properly. I was also responsible for the maintenance of the machinery which included; pedestrian mowers, ride-on mowers, strimmer’s, hedge trimmers, chainsaws and lawn tractors.

My enthusiasm for horticulture and love of plants is the driving force for my career. The aesthetics of grouping together complimentary plants according to their colouring, texture and form and the careful consideration of the way plants change through seasons, is the one aspect of the garden that I shall never tire of. I thank you for considering my application and I look forward to elaborating further at interview.

Yours Faithfully,

Richard Harwood
