Skilled Gardener
An ambitious, skilled gardener is sought to join a very special 14-acre landscaped garden near Lymington, in the New Forest. This private seafront estate has areas which are designated of special environmental interest, including SSSI and SINC. Originally planted in 1897, the garden is continually evolving. The horticultural team care for the arboretum; woodland areas with mature rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias; wildflower meadows; ornamental grasses and wildlife ponds. There are also formal areas, a vegetable garden and two greenhouses for propagation. The emphasis is on developing the garden in an environmentally sustainable manner.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to develop their career with scope for promotion to head gardener in the near future. The successful candidate will take a hands-on role but will also guide and motivate the team of two keen gardeners (one full time and one part time). He or she will report to the owner, a qualified horticulturist, who is currently acting as head gardener.
Applicants will ideally have a minimum Level 2 horticultural qualification combined with good plant knowledge. He or she will have a passion for horticulture and the drive and ability to develop the garden with the owner.
A charming two-bedroom Grade II listed cottage nearby, overlooking the sea, can be provided for the successful applicant if required. Council tax will be covered by the employer and all other bills will covered by the tenant.
The position is 37.5 hours week (flexible but currently 8am to 4pm with a paid mid-morning tea break of half an hour). No weekend work or overtime is required. Annual leave is 30 days (22 days plus 8 bank holidays).
SALARY: £20,000 – £25,000 DOE and if accommodation is required
