Sole Gardener
An opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener for a private estate in Surrey. You will have full responsibility and must have the confidence to care and maintain the estate. This is currently set out as four acres of formal gardens, including an orchard. The remainder is twelve acres of fields and woodland.
You should be physically fit, self-motivated and happy to work with minimal supervision. The owners appreciate that during the main growing season, additional support in the garden may be needed and would support the use of part-time/contractual workers to maintain hedges and help with grass cutting.
General duties include all aspects of seasonal garden care and maintenance of the formal gardens, including weeding, fertilizing and the division of plants as and when needed. The family like to see a long flowering season and ideally would like their gardener to be pro-active and make suggestions to them to add colour and interest. They would support their gardener to grow plants from seed or propagate. They enjoy seeing traditional flowers, roses and shrubs around the house. The formal lawns and beds surrounding the house need to be maintained to a high level at all times.
There are also numerous trees surrounding the gardens and the paths/driveway to the house. A candidate with a chainsaw qualification would be beneficial to do the low maintenance tree work. Any larger work would be completed by a qualified arborist in conjunction with the council in relation to protected trees. It would be the gardener’s responsibility to arrange this.
You must have competence in the safe operation of common garden machinery. You would also be responsible to ensure all machinery is kept in good working order and serviced as necessary.
There is the flexibility of the position being live in with accommodation provided.
