Part time Gardener

  • Live Out Part Time

Part-time Gardener required

An opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to play a key role in the ongoing development and maintenance of a private estate near Hambledon in Hampshire, on a 2-3 day/week basis.  This opportunity is open to self-employed gardeners who can demonstrate a thorough understanding of horticulture with excellent plant identification and time management skills.

The compact garden of approximately one-acre surrounds the house and is bordered by paddocks and copses extending approximately four-acres.  Located in a rural hamlet, the garden comprises lawns, herbaceous and perennial borders, mature and young trees, gravel areas and pathways, flagstone paving, climbing plants and shrubs throughout.  The garden is in the process of redesign and planting and as such, the new role is focussed on design implementation and the associated application of necessary horticultural knowledge.  The property does not currently include a kitchen garden or glasshouse, though this is something that is planned.  The expertise of the successful applicant will be drawn upon for this purpose specifically, in addition to that of the duties outlined below.

Heavy maintenance work is carried out by local garden contractors on a part-time basis, with assistance on the finer horticultural aspects currently being provided by a freelance Skilled Gardener.  The latter will be moving on from the role in early 2020, hence the requirement for a new Skilled Gardener to join the estate.  The successful applicant will be required to undertake general garden maintenance such as bed/border management and planting, pruning, and general seasonal garden management.  In addition to the above, other small maintenance tasks will be required to a lesser degree; raking gravel, sweeping of terraces, maintenance of outdoor paintwork and the water feature, for example.  At present, there is no requirement for mowing of lawns or paddocks, though this may be something that could be requested in instances where the maintenance contractors are on holiday.

Suitable candidates are likely to be self-employed, should hold an academic horticultural qualification and/or extensive gardening experience, possess good plant identification skills, good physical fitness, an ability to operate and carry out basic maintenance of garden machinery, and have a thorough understanding of seasonal garden management throughout the seasons.  Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) would be beneficial and a driving licence essential due to the rural location of the property.

This is an excellent opportunity for a local freelance gardener to become involved with a garden at an early stage of redevelopment and planting.  A generous hourly rate is offered in line with experience.
