The owners of a substantial private garden based near Whitchurch, Shropshire are looking for an experienced hands-on Sole Gardener / Groundsperson to manage, develop and maintain their garden.  This vacancy would suit a well-rounded and experienced gardener with excellent horticultural knowledge, ability to handle machinery and a self-motivated attitude and strong work ethic.

The property encompasses 70-acres in total including open fields, grasses, crop land and a small lake with bulrushes that attracts a variety of birdlife. The formal gardens of 5-acres are the primary focus of the property and comprise of expansive lawns, mixed and herbaceous beds and borders, roses, walled garden with a greenhouse dedicated to the propagation and growing of organic fruit and vegetables that are used in the main house, a mixed orchard with a variety of mature and young trees including damson, plums, apples, and lemon trees. The gardens are kept as organic as possible.

The owners have a genuine love for their garden and therefore the ideal candidate will have the ability to work as part of a team, taking appropriate guidance, and be able to progress tasks and communicate effectively. The ideal candidate will be confident in managing all aspects of a diverse private estate garden on their own such as lawncare, operate a small tractor and flail, use a fly mow, use a large cylinder mower and a ride-on, reseeding, scarify, prune roses, plant trees, trim a large hedge, chop dead trees and log it, water and irrigate plants and lawns as needed, apply compost where needed and weed borders as well as assisting with additional duties such as fixing fences, hedge planting and overseeing activities of external contractors where necessary.

The successful candidate must be capable of working independently, demonstrating self-motivation, reliability, and sound judgement. Candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

Applicants for this role will have excellent horticultural knowledge as well as experience working on a similar diverse private estate.  Demonstrable experience in each of the above areas to a high standard is essential. Competence and tickets in chainsaw operation are desirable but not essential as training can be provided. Applicants must hold a UK driving licence due to the rural location of the property.
