Reporting to: Head Gardener
Location: Ston Easton Park Estate, Ston Easton, Somerset , BA3 4DF
Salary: £28,000 d.o.e
Hours: 40 hours per week 8am – 4:30pm Mon-Fri. Occasional weekend watering duties may be required with time off in lieu.
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as a Gardener in a 30-acre historic estate in Somerset. Rich in history and charm, the estate features a Grade I listed building, Grade II ancillary structures, and extensive Grade II listed park and gardens. The estate boasts an array of picturesque features, including a beautifully enclosed walled garden, tiered lawns, a flourishing orchard, and expansive parkland.
Currently undergoing an extensive restoration, the estate is on a journey to reclaim its grandeur. Once the restoration is complete, the gardens will open to the public on select occasions, providing an opportunity to showcase their beauty and historic significance. Skilled, knowledgeable and motivated horticulturists, with experience covering all areas of ornamental gardening including formative pruning, an understanding of irrigation systems and establishing newly designed gardens are encouraged to apply. You will be working with the Gardening team to maintain and develop the gardens, grounds, and the wider estate to the highest horticultural standards.
Key tasks include;
• Carrying out practical horticultural tasks such as; mowing, hedge cutting, weeding,
mulching, planting, leaf clearing, care of ornamental borders to high horticultural and
presentation standards.
• To undertake and assist with the seasonal maintenance such as; shrub and specimen tree
maintenance, ornamental hedge pruning, pest management, grass cutting, compost
management, rose pruning, fruit tree pruning, harvesting and storing produce, propagation
etc.
• Fruit and vegetable production
• Planting and maintaining new herbaceous plants, trees, hedges and shrubs
• Pest and disease management
• Ensure organic and sustainability standards are met
• Ensure that all tools and machinery are correctly used, maintained and stored
• Assist the Head Gardener with the planning of maintenance routines, day-to-day tasks and report on progress
• Comply with all Health and Safety rules and regulations, including taking responsibility
for own health and safety and reasonable care for others’ health and safety, to include the
safe and compliant use of all garden machinery
• This job involves strenuous physical activity including soil cultivation, plant
establishment, maintenance and the use of a range of powered machinery.
Skills and Experience
• Minimum of two years of horticultural work experience in a private estate, historic,
botanic or kitchen garden setting.
• Broad-ranging horticultural expertise and excellent plant knowledge with evidence of
appropriate academic qualifications or experience.
• Minimum horticultural qualification to Level 2 (NVQ/RHS or equivalent).
• A well-organised individual with attention to detail and a keenness to provide the highest
standards of presentation.
• A practical, hands-on, hard-working gardener with excellent team working and
communication skills.
• Capable of taking responsibility and working on own initiative.
• Full and clean UK driving licence.
• Experience of driving compact tractors, attachments and using a wide range of tools and
equipment including ride-on mowers, hedge cutters and strimmers.
Desirable Skills
• Experience in organic practices.
• Current driving licence
• Any LANTRA certifications in machinery and equipment including grass cutting.
