An excellent opportunity has arisen for a friendly and motivated Gardener & Housekeeper Couple to join the team managing and maintaining the beautiful house and gardens of a private estate near Alresford, Hampshire.  The welcoming family currently employs one additional Housekeeper to assist with household duties and a groundsman & Lead Gardener, to whom the successful Gardener will report.

Built in the late 1700’s, the impressive Grade II listed house is situated within 35-acres of parkland with formal gardens of approximately 13-acres, originally laid out by Richard Woods: a contemporary of Capability Brown.  The grounds have been carefully restored to its former glory in several phases over the years, most recently since 2017 by the current owner, with more sensitive restoration planned.  The property owners are passionate about the house and gardens, such that only tree, shrub and flower species available in the mid-1700’s, have been used in the garden restoration.

The formal aspect of the garden includes expansive lawns, hedges, a pool, herbaceous borders, a large kitchen garden, mixed beds/borders, ornamental shrubberies, young and mature/ancient specimen trees with woodland walks, topiary, a considerable Ha-ha and much more, all with impressive vistas across the estate and surrounding South Downs. The Gardener will work closely with the Lead Gardener responsible for all aspects of the gardens and therefore need to be hands on, self-motivated, and organised whilst being able to remain flexible in their approach to work. Working hours are Monday to Friday 8 am to 5 pm.

The Housekeeper’s duties include maintaining cleanliness and order in all areas by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting floors and surfaces, as well as cleaning windows, mirrors, kitchens, and bathrooms. Responsibilities also involve making beds, changing linens, doing laundry and ironing, and emptying bins. Additional duties include restocking cleaning supplies, organising rooms, and reporting any maintenance issues to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment. The working hours are 4 days per week – 7 am to 3 pm including alternate weekends as the owners visit the property most weekends. The House Manager carries out the cooking for the family although it would be advantageous if the housekeeper is happy to cook lunches, occasional dinners and work with the House Manager for events.

Rent-free accommodation is provided for the couple in the form of a one-bedroom property attached to the main house with its own entrance. Council tax and all utility bills are covered by the employer.

A driving licence is required for the role, due to the location of the property. Relevant experience in gardening and housekeeping is required, along with a proactive approach, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of an established team. References and DBS check will be requested at offer stage.

COMBINED SALARY: circa £65,000
