Gardener – High-End Private Estate (Live-Out) – Oxfordshire
A third position has become available for an exceptional opportunity as a hands-on Gardener / Groundsperson to join a small, professional team maintaining the horticultural features of a beautiful private estate near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. This is a full-time, permanent gardening role offering the chance to work within a diverse, well-established private estate garden with high standards of horticultural care.
The 550-acre private estate is primarily grazed land, with approximately 50 acres surrounding the main house dedicated to formal gardens and landscaped pleasure grounds. These include a formal terrace with parterres, extensive lawns, and mature specimen trees such as copper beech, oak, yew, and cedar. Additional features include ornamental shrubs, woodland areas, fishponds, water features, a swimming pool, and a tennis court. The estate also benefits from a traditional walled kitchen garden—currently ornamental but with scope for productive restoration—and two greenhouses used for plant propagation and vegetable growing, making this an attractive opportunity for candidates interested in estate gardening and kitchen garden development.
The Gardener will join a small estate gardening team, reporting to the Estate Manager, and will be responsible for maintaining the gardens to a consistently high professional standard. This horticultural role involves supporting seasonal planting programmes to ensure year-round colour and interest, as well as assisting with the planning and delivery of annual garden maintenance schedules for borders, trees, and lawns across the estate.
Daily duties will vary and include assisting with planting schemes, maintaining herbaceous borders through pruning, staking, feeding, and plant care, and monitoring overall plant health and presentation. The role also includes comprehensive lawn care such as irrigation, reseeding, fertilising, and scarifying. Practical gardening tasks will involve weeding, digging, mulching, watering, edging, hedge cutting, pruning, and bed preparation. Candidates must be confident using horticultural tools and machinery including mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters, chainsaws, and leaf blowers, making this a well-rounded groundsperson role suited to experienced gardeners.
In addition to core gardening responsibilities, the Gardener / Groundsperson will assist with wider estate duties, particularly during the winter months. Maintaining tools and equipment in good working order is essential, with any faults reported promptly. A strong understanding of Health and Safety at Work regulations is required, along with the ability to identify and report hazards or security risks across the estate. Relevant qualifications such as PA1 / PA6 spraying certificates and chainsaw certification are desirable, although training can be provided for the right candidate. A full UK driving licence is essential due to the rural location of the estate.
