Head Gardener – Live In – Countryside Estate Gardens, Suffolk
An exceptional opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled and experienced head gardener to develop and maintain a private 13-acre garden set in the beautiful Suffolk countryside.
These magnificent gardens set around the river Stour have been enjoyed by visitors on NGS Open Days for 69 years. The gardens comprise formal borders, a rose garden, a lily pond, large lawns, extensive hedges, a large walled kitchen garden, riverside walks and woodland. The gardens contain many mature trees. Wilder areas of the garden are particularly good in spring starting with snowdrops, followed by daffodils and splendid displays of apple and cherry blossom, ending with clouds of cow parsley.
In summer, the formal areas of the garden take centre stage with herbaceous borders, hydrangea borders, the rose garden and a recently developed yew parterre. The extensive walled kitchen garden contains glorious herbaceous borders, an orchard, a newly developed vegetable garden with raised beds and a new custom built Alitex greenhouse.
The ideal candidate will be very experienced and knowledgeable in all areas of horticulture, having worked in a similar role. The role requires advanced practical skills in garden development and maintenance, vegetable growing, plant propagation, glasshouse management, and the operation and maintenance of a range of horticultural machinery and provision of cut flowers for the house. Maintenance duties extend to the swimming pool.
This is a hands-on role, and you will work closely with one other gardener, and the owners who take a keen interest in the garden and its continuing development. A certificate in spraying and formal, horticultural qualifications (a minimum of RHS Level 2) are desirable. Flexibility to cover weekend watering is required.
A 3-bedroom cottage with a garden is provided rent free with the role. References will be requested at offer stage as well as a DBS check.
