Head Gardener
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an ambitious head gardener to manage and maintain a beautiful garden in Hampshire. The position is full time, permanent and is available as a live out or live in vacancy.
The property is a large grade 2 listed house in 5 acres of mature gardens consisting of mixed and herbaceous beds and borders, a large pond, cascades, natural areas with long grasses, daffodils, yew hedges, box hedges , fruit trees, extensive lawns and some formal areas..
The majority of the garden is mature and is required to be maintained to a very high standard, requiring efficient planning and an associated knowledge of plant behaviour throughout the seasons. The head gardener will be responsible for the management of the garden, and maintaining the gardens to a high horticultural standard. They will be responsible for other staff.
Suitable candidates will hold demonstrable experience in a similar role as well as academic horticultural qualifications at Level 2, ideally Level 3. Experience in specialist pruning is essential. Good general plant knowledge, spray certificates PA1 / PA6, driving licence and experience using and basic machinery maintenance is required for the position. Chainsaw certificates CS30 / CS31 would be an advantage.
Other requirements for the role are good communications skills and ability to work alongside other staff and contractors. The gardener will be energetic, will have determination and drive to maintain and enhance the garden as required.
Accommodation can be provided for the successful candidate if required. The property available is a two-bedroom cottage, rent free, suitable for single occupancy or a couple. Children and pets are welcome. Council tax will be paid by the employer and all other bills such as water, electricity etc. will be paid by the tenant.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with flair and the enthusiasm to maintain the garden as well as develop the new areas of the garden. The role would suit a knowledgeable, active and self-motivated head gardener with hands-on experience in large private estate gardens, as well as a proven ability to work well on their own.
SALARY: Circa £30,000 depending on experience
